There are few stores Springfield shoppers can go in and not only get a piece for their home but also learn about a country’s history. But that’s what you can expect to find at Arizaga Home (210 W. Republic Road, Suite 108, Springfield, 417-708-4550). Together, Jesus Arizaga and David Wenzel opened Arizaga Home in August 2018, attached to David Wenzel salon. It was a longtime dream realized for the pair, who saw a need for a new type of home decor and furniture store in Springfield. “When we got together we started teaming up and working on our own home and finding that we really had a passion for it,” Wenzel says. “And realizing that there weren’t a lot of places out there that had some midcentury modern style, but then also had a touch of his culture, the Mexican culture.” So that’s what Arizaga and Wenzel set out to find: pieces that fit the midcentury modern style with touches of industrial and Mexican influence. The store is stocked with staples like couches, tables and lamps, along with accessories like candles, pillows, art and gifts.

Attached to the store is Wenzel’s salon, so clientele overlaps. The salon was in place first, so Wenzel was able to ask his clients for ideas and get a feel for what Springfield was missing. He added Arizaga Home pieces throughout the salon to intrigue clients to go next door. “Not only are they making their hair beautiful, but they can make their home beautiful too,” Wenzel says

Q&A with Co-Owner, David Wenzel

417 Home: What were some challenges you faced when opening the store?
David Wenzel: It’s a lot harder than what you may think it to be. Especially when it came to the in-fill [of the store]. To be able to just look into a space and try to envision it is very difficult. When we were looking at this and there were no walls or anything in here, it actually looked a lot smaller than what it does today.

417 Home: Can you describe your process of picking out items for the store for the first time?
D.W.: When we went to the Dallas market center to start picking out our items, we had no idea what we were doing. It was literally like a completely different world. We just started working slowly through all these places and they have over 3,000 companies in that building, so to go from one place to another place was just mind-blowing for us. But then all of a sudden we started finding our niche. We found companies that had a vibe or the owners of that company, so it slowly grew into that.
