Mundos Latin Kitchen & Bar (5493 N. 17th St., Ozark, 417-485-2160) does a lot of things well, but its dishes made with plantains are some of my must-try favorites. First up from the appetizer menu: tostones. These are green plantains that are fried once, then smashed into a thin disc shape almost like a tortilla and then fried again to crispy perfection. Then they’re topped with beans, steak, pico de gallo, sour cream and cotija cheese. Just as delish are the fried plantains, made with super-ripe and curiously sweet plantains, fried to golden brown and served with a tasty and cooling cilantro cream sauce. Finally, don’t miss the mofongo, a Puerto Rican dish served in such a clever way by using fried plantains mixed with garlic and pork chicharron, then topped with shrimp and finished with a creamy cheese sauce. Every bite is a perfect taste of Latin American cuisine.
